Scottish Pelagic Sector Champions Sustainability

The primary goal of the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group is to secure MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification for all its fisheries, a target it continues to pursue diligently. North Sea herring was the first fishery to earn this certification in 2008 and has been successfully recertified up to the present day.

SPSG drives forward the industry’s sustainable and environmental development, and since its inception, has launched several sustainability initiatives from sustainable certification to programmes of scientific work and data collection.

Effective management of pelagic fish stocks is vital for ensuring food security and by maintaining healthy fish populations, the Scottish pelagic sector contributes to a stable and sustainable food supply both domestically and internationally.

Adopting latest vessel designs and catching technologies means the Scottish fleet is already making important contributions to achieving targets for Net Zero carbon emission.

Efforts to further reduce any negative environmental impacts, include embracing technologies that enhance the selection of their target catch before the net is even deployed, and seeking ways to mitigate possible bycatch of any vulnerable species. Active engagement with the latest scientific research demonstrates the commitment of the Scottish pelagic sector to continuously enhance the industry’s environmental credentials.
