Mackerel

Mackerel is an abundant fish found in the north-east Atlantic that undertakes seasonal migrations.

North-east Atlantic mackerel was MSC certified in 2016, but suspended in 2019 due to issues outside the control of the Scottish industry, following some coastal states setting their own unilateral quotas that were not part of an international agreement, and which led to overall catch levels above the scientific advice. Despite this, the North-east Atlantic mackerel stock is currently at above recent historic average levels, and above the Maximum Sustainable Yield level where it is considered capable of being sustainably harvested, meaning the fish is still a good sustainable choice for the consumer.
