New season fresh Scottish mackerel is now available in supermarkets and fishmongers, providing a tasty, nutritious and value-for-money meal option.
Packed full of vitamins, minerals and heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids, mackerel is ideal for grilling and baking and punches a whole load of great flavour.
Scottish mackerel is now being caught in the traditional year-end fishery, with landings coming in every day. Mackerel is one of the most sustainable fish around, with the stock in good shape and the fishery carrying the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council ecolabel for the responsible way it is managed.
Mackerel fishermen are also members of the Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group (SPSSG) – an industry wide initiative comprising of catchers and processors to ensure the sector is truly sustainable.
Ian Gatt, chairman of SPSG, said: “Mackerel is incredibly tasty and is also great value for money. It works well with strong spicy flavours, as well as tangy accompaniments such as beetroot and gooseberries.
“UK health experts recommend that people should try to eat two portions of fish per week, one of which should be an oily fish such as mackerel.”
